Kemono Friends – Penguin Brigade (B) [05/29/2024]

Penguins are very odd creatures. They are flightless birds that move in colonies. They have an extremely thick blubber that keeps them insulated and warm. Their meals consist of fish and other small creatures in the cold Antarctic oceans. They are quite shy and territorial at the same time, preferring to be with their own families rather than interact with outside birds. And even if they look silly waddling on land, their speed underwater is not to be scoffed at. Of course, with global warming, their biggest struggle is the loss of the frozen ice which they call home which also protects them from the predators in the oceans. This, pollution, and loss of prey put them at risk of endangerment.

The Royal Penguin, renowned for their signature golden crown, acts as the leader of her flock. When she swings, once per turn with her climax in play and you meet her field requirements, you may pay her costs and reveal the top card of your deck, and if that card is a Friends (フレンズ) character or a “PPP Platinum Ticket” (event), you may stand her two other friends, Emperor and Rockhopper Penguin.

Royal Penguin, along with her idol troupe, are an Exodia-esque combo where you have to fulfill very strict requirements for a particular reward. In her case, Royal Penguin allows you to stand her friends for another round of attacks, assuming you swing with her last.

Speaking of which, the cards that Royal Penguin stands are that of your Emperor Penguin on the left and Rockhopper Penguin on the right. Emperor Penguin is an early play healer that loses a level in hand, assuming you have her field requirements of the other two penguins for the end-game board, Gentoo Penguin and Humboldt Penguin. Rockhopper Penguin has an on-play scry ability and is a level three killer.

The two early play requirements for Emperor Penguin are above. Humboldt Penguin on the left is the search brainstorm for the deck, a tap two brainstorm that also gives additional power to your center character in your front stage during your opponent’s turn. Gentoo Penguin grants hand encore to your center character and is a level three assist.

For my sanity’s sake and the fact that I’m having trouble remembering who is who, we’ll call the penguins by their Japanese names: Koutei (Emperor) [コウテイ], Royal (Royal) [ロヤル], Hururu (Humboldt) [フルル], Gen (Gentoo) [ジェン], and Iwatobi (Rockhopper) [イワトビ].

For the early game, Koutei is in charge. Koutei is a Maguro profile that simultaneously mills your deck and grabs you advantage throughout the game.

Assisting their emperor, the other penguins gather to take on their enemies. Iwatobi is a Taigei profile that strikes terror into your foe. Gen is a Rize profile when sent to waiting room. Haruru is an interesting beater that gains hand encore if you meet her field conditions and grows in power for each character you have in your level zone.

It may seem strange to carry a non-penguin in the penguin deck. However, Miss Margay here is a bonder to Royal Penguin. When Miss Margay is reversed, you must mill the top two cards of your deck, and if you mill a level two or higher card, you may send Miss Margay to your stock. Margay is a cheap way to mill your deck while also potentially netting you extra stock.

The only other non-penguin card is the pairing of Kaban and her event. Kaban is a bonder to the event on the right and goes to waiting room whenever your opponent plays a climax. The event itself, which works for Royal Penguin’s condition, is a large power pump that can be used as a backup as well.

In terms of backups, you have the PPP Platinum Ticket that can be bonded to with Kaban. Alternatively, the Haruru penguin counter above is essentially a costless counter that refunds stock from the top of your deck. However, as part of her condition, you must only have blue characters on your field, so keep that in mind.

To prepare for their performance, the penguin girls need time to plan and practice for their act. Koutei staring into the void is a costless beater that prevents the use of your events and backups. Royal is a burst powered beater that pumps power equal to the number of your other characters on field when she’s played. Royal clutching her mic is a drop search profile. Gen staring blankly is a climax filter that salvages any blue character to hand. Also, if your opponent cancels her damage, you may send her to stock. Iwabi sitting patiently is a Married Life profile (power pump on climax play) that also acts as an assist to characters in front. Royal staring blankly gains hand encore and power if you have a full field. You may also refund a stock from your waiting room when you play her if you have a full field.

The penguins are preparing for their ultimate performance. Assemble the girls, and may their penguin performance bedazzle both you and your opponent.
