World Trigger – Fujin a.k.a. Squid Saber (Y) [01/04/2023]

It’s a squid saber. It’s not a squid sabre. What kind of sabre has multiple tentacles that stretch out in that kind of pattern? Those aren’t tentacles. That’s the power of wind emanating off the blade as a result of heightened “trion”. But how does that stop the character from invoking the power of squids? I’m going to stop this conversation now. Calamari blade! I know where you live. (True conversation between myself and a friend).

Jin, master of the squid sabre, is the finisher of the deck. Using his powerful aquatic weapon, Jin fires powerful “wind”-based tentacles at your opponent that lash at them should they cancel his swing. Jin’s combo must be paid when he attacks, and as the sentence before describes, only activates if your opponent cancels. If your opponent does cancel, Jin lashes at your opponent twice, dealing damage equal to the number of squid swords (Fujin) you have in your waiting room. His damage is potentially modular, allowing you to determine the amount of damage his recurring swings deal by limiting or expanding the total number of his weapons in the waiting room.

Squid sabre (Fujin) is an Akatsuki event that checks up to five cards in your deck compared to the traditional event. However, it does come with a slight demerit, being unable to be used if you have seven or more stock. Miwa bonds to the squid sabre and has a nice anti-movement ability on play that you can apply to one of your opponent’s characters. Keep in mind that his anti-movement ability remains until the end of your opponent’s next turn.

Konami is the early game combo of choice, an Oboro profile adept at retaining hand while gaining additional resources for the player. Konami is an interesting Oboro profile due to her ability to gain additional power during your opponent’s turn after her combo. This gives Konami an advantage in combat as her cross-turn power lets her face off against lower powered threats with the option to bounce back to hand if need be, giving her unique modality compared to other Oboro combos that would more so easily fall to level zeros with their extremely low power on the opponent’s turn.

If there’s one thing that Jin’s deck loves more than anything it’s soul triggers. Jin himself loves soul triggers, particularly if they are in the deck. Soul triggers increase the odds that your opponent cancels his damage, and as such, they can help him trigger his ability more often. Furthermore, the deck can take advantage of the presence of soul triggers with cards like the above. Yuu is a modular support that works both in clock and on field. While at the top of your clock, at the start of your opponent’s climax phase, Yuu turns all the cards in your hand into free costless 2000 powered counters to defend your field. Furthermore, her secondary ability while on field allows you to pay a cost to potentially gain additional hand without committing a combo if the top card of your deck carries a soul icon. Jin in his casual outfit is a cost zero stock reverser that allows you to draw and discard a card if he triggers a soul icon during his attack. Lastly, Izumi is a backrow support with a bunch of modular abilities. His first static ability allows you to redraw and discard a card much like Jin whenever a soul icon is triggered, but his ability affects all your characters instead. His second ability lets you tap himself to give one of your characters an enormous power boost. Lastly, his final ability is an expensive bounce ability to rid your opponent’s board of any annoying threat.

Use their special soul icon based abilities to filter through your deck and grab pieces as you need.

In terms of beating over your opponent’s board, Jin’s deck has a limitless arsenal of weapons at its disposal. Kazuma is an oversized beater that gains power whenever he triggers a soul icon. Additionally, if needed and to increase his odds, he has an optional double trigger ability for a cheap stock cost. Touma is an additional option that can potentially freely kill one of your opponent’s front row characters at no cost if you manage to mill a climax with his first on-play ability. He also refunds your stock should you have a near full field when you play him.

Jin’s unlimited tentacles don’t just apply to his weapons. The deck also has access to plenty of hand fixing tools. Shohei is a double handfix, having a redraw ability and the option to drop search through the top five cards of your deck. Reiji is an accelerating handfix at the start of your climax phase. Kei is both a stock generator and hand fix or double stock generator if need be.

As we reach the end of our post here, the final card I’d like to mention is the event above. This card grants two characters of yours power and the ability to trigger twice a turn for no cost. This card works extremely well in tandem with Jin. Jin’s costs to use his ability are heavy, and he doesn’t get a refund even if his ability fails. And given that Jin’s costs are when he attacks rather than when his opponent cancels, we need to make sure we generate the resource beforehand. This event pushes Jin to his limits as it makes extra stock and gives further opportunities for Jin to trigger for more damage. Additionally, since the deck uses eight choice triggers, if Jin hits a climax, you can use that to fill up your hand or stock for the following Jin’s swing.

Given the high costs and relatively low power of cards on our field during our opponent’s turn, backups are not very recommended. Jin is all about burst power and stealing the show. Fukoshima is a level one search brainstorm that provides power in front as well, perfect for give that little bit of extra power to your Konami(s). Kako is a Chiyuri profile with extra power during your turn that can grab many cards in your deck such as that of your events. Karasuma is a unique modular card with two unique effects: you may accelerate at the start of your climax phase to either give him power or two soul for the turn while sending him to stock at the end of your turn. Kei is a clean cut profile with the ability to grow in power whenever your other characters swing, saving one of your other cards when he defeats his opponent. 3/2 Konami is an early play healer that has an optional ability to accelerate the start of your opponent’s attack phase and subtract two soul from one of your opponent’s characters. Lastly, Konami in a pink hoodie is a level zero support that can act as a level zero stock reverser while on the field.

The squid is quite a unique creature. Belonging to the class of cephalopods, meaning literally “head foot”, the slimy little creature and its molluscan relatives are almost exclusively saltwater creatures. Considered to be one of the oldest creatures or hailing from the prehistoric era, squids have been roaming the open seas before the dawn of man. Similar to its distant cousin of the octopus, squids are well known for shooting ink at threats nearby and camouflaging with their background to give them a better chance from being detected. Considered a near staple in many seafood flourishing nations around the world and ancient past, the squid is a major food source for its most dangerous predator, the homo sapien. Whether eaten as sashimi or battered up and fried, the squid is a popular dish ready to bedazzle any party.
