NA WGP 2022 – 1st Place, Yoomin Kim, Quintessential Quintuplets (R/G)

WS WGP is one of the largest official tournaments for Weiss Schwarz, supported by Bushiroad directly. Players from each region flock to attend and show off their skills. Initially an in-person exclusive event with several regional tournaments followed by a national invite competition, due to the pandemic, the tournament has moved to online remote play.

How did you feel about the tourney overall?

The tourney was great, but I would have preferred more players. Other than a handful of issues, it was a good experience.

Why did you choose to play your series/deck?

The finisher is good enough to steal games out of nowhere. It can reasonably finish off opponents with a half or near full clock at level 2 or comfortably from level 3. The deck also generates resources with relative ease which helps with setting up for your end game.

What do you think the greatest strengths in your deck were?

The finisher and the bonus hand size from backrow cards are definitely the deck’s shining strengths. The deck can also surprisingly wall out many decks using counters. The deck can generate hand for relatively low cost, and the finisher itself allows you to dig for cards from the top of your deck. The raw finishing power of the deck is absurdly high. Dealing three damage is deadly, and the added Moca effect can assist in ensuring damage with your following attacks.

What do you think are weaknesses that the deck does not cover very well?

If I have an unlucky early game and miss targets for my level 1 combo, it is a bit tougher to keep pressure on my opponent’s field and keep up in damage. Given the nature of my level 1 combo, if I mill out a lot of climaxes, it can put my deck in a poor state making me more susceptible to taking a lot of damage early. Eating a lot of damage early puts me in a situation that’s hard to recover from.

What did you think about your deck’s performance overall?

I heavily underestimated the deck’s strengths since I had minimal testing with the deck. Going into the games, seeing opponents lose at early level 3 with just double finishers or a single one showed that the finisher is quite potent. The level 1 combo, the level 1 stock generators, and both the early plays get power when you use an ACT effect. As such, character backups, which count as ACT effects, synergize very well with the deck allowing for cross-turn power. With the use of a backup, the level 1s can comfortably get over 8.5k and the lv 3s can get over 13k. I chose to run the lv 0 backup because it doubles as both a runner and an anti-change backup, which is very cost-efficient.

I usually try to play aggressively during the early game using the Riki profile to find clean cuts and spam my level 1 combo, pushing for large amounts of damage in the early game. The level 1 stock generator really helps with providing extra resource, and the early plays in the deck can survive for a couple of turns if I have a backup in hand. Overall, I think this deck has a good balance of walling, pushing damage, and getting resources.

What was your favourite card in the deck?

The Itsuki finisher is most likely my favorite card as that was what won me the tournament. The deck can easily generate hand which pairs nicely with the Itsuki finisher. The cost of the finisher uses hand instead of stock, and given the bonus hand size from the backrow Itsuki, it is very easy to carry out its condition for the climax combo.

What are some potential changes you would consider making to the deck?

I would maybe cut a minus soul counter for another clean cut profile as the clean cut makes the level 0 game a lot stronger. Other than that, I think the deck has little to no improvements needed.

What was your hardest match-up?

The mirror match was probably the hardest. I played three mirror matches, and those were definitely the hardest matches. Even when I pulled ahead on damage, hand, and stock, I almost lost to the finisher alone.

Is there any memorable moment that occurred during the tourney?

I think my favorite moment was from the final game. It was a bit concerning since I leveled up really fast while my opponent had good cancels early on. I was at level 3 while my opponent was still at level 1 and the odds of myself winning were becoming slim. Luckily, my opponent milled a lot or triggered several climaxes so I was able to level him up twice to level 3. This was a huge boost of morale. I was able to finish him off during the next turn.

What is your favourite part of this series?

I didn’t watch the second season or the movie, but the series is ok.

How do you feel about the current Japanese sets?

I think more sets are suffering from the fifty card syndrome where you are running out of deck slots to play key cards. Therefore, there’s a lot more power creep that combines really good effects on individual cards that make sets more versatile and broken.

Any shout-outs?

Shoutout to the BC homies.

Final words?

It was a great experience. Hopefully, there are in-person nationals next year.
