The “Leafa” Counter

The “Leafa” counter is a filtering counter that works very well to push your deck to a closer state of canceling. Also, depending on the situation, Leafa can just be a nice way to fix your hand and declutter your hand of unwanted cards such as extra climaxes before refresh.

“Leafa” counters have existed for quite some time in the game, becoming popular with the titular title card above. Although Leafa is not the original, she is quite a popular face of the said profile. The effect is quite simple. When you resolve this backup, you reveal the top card of your deck and add it to hand if it fits the trait or requirements listed on the backup. Afterwards, you must discard a card from hand. Keep in mind that you must add the top card of your deck to hand if it fulfils the condition. This backup can perform a duo duty of protecting your characters and hand filtering as well.

Generally speaking, newer versions of this Leafa effect usually happen earlier in the game with newer sets beginning at level 1. Keep in mind that the Leafa restrictions can differ like the case for the Kotori shown above on the right. One potential downside of the backup is that it reveals information to your opponent as you must show them what is off the top of your deck. However, unlike other mill backups, should the condition fail with a climax on the top, you at least come out with another cancel to preserve your life total. Use the Leafa counter wisely to fix your hand and defend your life bar.
