Tantei Opera Milky Holmes Set Breakdown [07/15/2021]

Tantei Opera Milky Holmes (Milky Holmes for short) is a series involving the adventurous antics of a troupe of detectives-in-training versus those of crime doers called phantom thieves. Employed with the power of magical toys, the main protagonists are granted abilities which let them turn the tide of battle. However, very often the protagonists lose the powers of their special “toys”, forcing them to go through comical episodes to hopefully regain their skills once more.

Milky Holmes joined Weiss Schwarz in 2010 and has a total of three booster sets, along with three extra boosters, four trial decks, one joke booster and four special PR packs with sleeves. It’s latest set was released in May 2016.

The series comes with three archetypes:

The archetype that largely encompasses most of the cards in the series are Detective (探偵). All the protagonists of the series carry this tag along with some side characters.

Considered the antagonists of the series, the villains take on the trait of Phantom Thief (怪盗).

Then, finally, there’s the loveable yet questionably helpful assistance force known as the police department force, Genius Four lead by the adorable 1000IQ Kokoro Akechi. They are represented by the trait, Police (警察).

One of the common mechanics of this set is the prevalent chain effects whose costs include swapping a card from your level zone with that of a climax in your waiting room. Normally, since level zone cards are usually static and remain there until the end of the game, players opt to place cards in there with the colours they play but are otherwise unused in the later stages of the game (many beater level 0s for example) or cards that fulfill a mechanic called EXPERIENCE. You would not really want to move climax cards into the level zone, except in this series.

Cards like the ones above activate effects based on whether a climax is moved into the level zone. While some cards intentionally put climaxes in the level zone, other cards in the series work to remove them and replace them with the normal playable cards. Depending on the individual card, effects can range from providing extra power to getting hand, etc.,

Milky Holmes is one full interesting experience alright. If you’re up for the antics and hilarity that ensues as the protagonists go about on their adventures, then Milky Holmes is a good choice for you.
