Frieren – Of Grimoires and Elves (B) [09/03/2026]

In the mystical land of Frieren, grimoires are magical books that are able to provide special knowledge of spells. Once acquired and read, the user is then able to absorb said knowledge and replicate its magic. And the spell diversity for grimoires are plentiful and varied. The magic hidden behind the pages can do anything from helping with laundry or slaying the ancient demonic kitchen pest known as the “cockroach.”

Learning from her rather slobbish master, yes, the same master who was part of the party that slayed the demon king, Fern follows after her footsteps to adopt the mystical magical techniques. Despite primarily acting as Frieren’s adopted mother and often spending more time trying to wake the elder elf while helping with basic chores, Frieren does, at the very least, reciprocate Fern’s care and respect by paying much attention to Fern’s training. And as proof of their work together, Fern’s prowess is shown above with an uncounterable mystical blast straight at your opponent’s core.

As part of Fern’s tutelage, Frieren acts as her mentor in the early game with her own demonstration of magical power. With her combo in mind, Frieren performs a Cigarettes ability to reclaim extra hand for the following turn.

In the backrow, there are a set number of pieces depicting the warm relationship between this pseudo-family. Frieren addressing Fern’s hair is a salvage brainstorm that checks five but only hits on books (it can also grab Frieren’s flower spell). Alternatively, you may also use it to draw and discard. Thanks to the new set, Frieren working in the mines in the center (a level zero bottom deck reverser) can be used to refund stock if you somehow mill it during the brainstorm’s resolution. Lastly, Fern carrying Frieren on her back power pumps one of your characters up to three times during your main phase or attack phase if you so happen to draw cards. Secondly, if you don’t have a second copy of her on stage, if you have a book climax in play, you may draw a card at the start of your encore phase.

For what it’s worth, Frieren and thus, her pupil, Fern as well, are excellent scourers for knowledge. Traversing high and low, Frieren and Fern are capable of fetching and collecting just about any spell they need. Frieren in the bath is an on-play Zero Two profile that can fetch any character from your deck. Fern looking puzzled nabs extra stock on reverse with a book climax in play with a little bit of foresight attached. Lastly, Frieren petting her proud pupil is a double drop searcher on attack to filter your hand and fetch what you need.

Lastly, one of the newest additions, Fern hugging Frieren possessively is a new early play for book decks. While Fern will heal you on her own, if you discard one of your precious characters in hand, you can send one of your opponent’s cards flying, leaving an open space on their board for you to take advantage of.

Given Fern’s protection during your turn anyways, it is almost certain that she will survive into your opponent’s turn. As such, presuming you can keep a full board, the money counter is an excellent defensive option to keep you alive. With the new ways to generate stock and cheap filters, this is more of a reasonable option to use within the mid-to-late game. Frieren smiling smugly is a memory counter that can defend your cards while sending any annoying threats to memory permanently.

As a few final bits of knowledge to help guide your way, we begin with Frieren among the flowers, a stock shuffle event that can be salvaged from the brainstorm that also provides a free character salvage on play. Frieren in her battle pose is a stock standard climax swapper that is also a level zero bottom deck reverser. Frieren peering through her junk treasures clocks a character on play from hand to scour the top four cards of your deck for a card. Fern in her battle pose is a large beater with on-attack scry and provides you free stock should she reveal an event through her mill when sent to waiting room. Fern looking adorable is a check x profile based off your opponent’s number of characters. Frieren looking surprised is a freefresher that can also sacrifice itself when you are level two to scour the top four cards of your deck for a character or event.

The world is filled with magic in more ways than one. Tolkien implied that words are power, and this is evidently showed within Frieren where grimoires are collections of said words. With just a few sentences or a couple of paragraphs, Frieren and Fern can bring about a wave of change or, for the extension of friendship, some slight amusement.
