The “Zero Two” Profile

It’s kinda an odd name when you think of it. Depending on your familiarity with anime, you may or may not have an inkling of who it refers to. If you were thinking the exact same character that shares that name, you’d be entirely correct.

Zero Two, or at least the origin of the name for the ability, came out in late 2018. Zero Two was a rather unique effect that enabled you to trade your other cards on field for potential advantage from the top of your deck. Zero Two’s design is somewhat risky since you are not guaranteed hand since it’s a top check. Many may first look at the profile and be turned away by the cost to sacrifice a character on your stage, but this is often a minor downside. Zero Two sacrifices when she attacks, meaning that you can send a character that was reversed and bound for the waiting room just a bit earlier and trading their open slot for a replacement. There are also other ways to mitigate the impact of her sacrifice cost such as sacrificing a character with built-in encore, letting you keep the character while also giving you one more hand.

Keep in mind that Zero Two states you can sacrifice any character on stage. This includes your back row if need be. And as such, Clean Cut profiles can readily make advantage of that effect, letting you sneak one of your cards into freshly renewed spot in the back. Cards like waiting room Fukaziroh profiles are also an option if you need that desperately forced mill at that very moment.

Modern Zero Two profiles haven’t really changed. In fact, what’s more interesting is the wording and the card effect is more or less exactly the same outside of the trait change. I think the biggest boon has probably been the shift from a level one profile to a level zero profile, making level reversers and other cards that would normally get reversed anyways into additional hand fodder for the early game. As of this writing, it’s still a relatively uncommon profile for the most part; however, it has been seeing more printings as of recent, especially as a trial deck profile.

Along with the return of some profiles such as Koume, it may definitely see more of a rise in the future, especially if there ends up being more enter the waiting room synergies.
