Frieren – Like Master, Like Student (B) [04/10/2024]

Fern is the student of her master, Frieren. Learning from the most powerful mage on the continent, Fern strives to be like her teacher, just not in terms of her personal habits.

Preceding her student and standing in her own master’s favourite spell, Frieren boldly takes her place on the stage. With her climax in play, when Frieren attacks, while you have three or more events with Magic [魔法] in its name in your waiting room, you may choose one of three different abilities to use. The first lets you mill your opponents deck and grant her power for the turn. The second ability lets you perform a Moca ability. The third ability lets you discard two cards in hand to deal three damage.

Fern, following right behind her master’s footsteps, is a mage of substantial power. When her climax is played and you fulfill her conditions, you may salvage either one of two differently named events from your waiting room to hand, either Flying Magic or Ornament Finding Magic.

The two magics mentioned by Fern are shown here. Flying Magic on the left is an Akatsuki event that can be played as a counter as well. Ornament Finding Magic is a counter event that allows you to draw and discard a card while also salvaging a character.

Outside of the two aforementioned events, the above events can also be included, depending on your own preference of course. The first spell on the left, Grape Transforming Magic, allows you to level down a character on your opponent’s field while stuffing itself to stock. The middle spell is Attack Magic (Zoltrak) which deals direct damage to your opponent. Lastly, Fern’s spell that she’s holding is that of Defensive Magic which is a money counter that can be used if you have full board that also gives power to one of your characters as well. Keep in mind that they all carry “Magic” in their naming text, thus meeting the requirements for Frieren’s finishing abilities.

(Optional): To meet the requirements to play our red event, the following Fern cards above can help in ensuring we meet our colour requirements. The first Fern is a level zero reverser that also allows you to rearrange the top two cards of your deck on play. The second Fern has a unique ability to remove all markers from any specific zone on your opponent’s field. Additionally, she’s a Kazuma profile, perfect for digging through your deck.

To show off to her student and also lead by example, Frieren steps up and demonstrates her magical prowess to her pupil. Her first card on the left grants her power and a level along with the ability to reveal and stock the top card of your deck when she attacks if the card is level one or higher. Frieren to the right is a climax filter that also gains power once per turn when you use an event. When she attacks, you may pay her costs to grant all characters the ability to pay a stock on climax trigger to blind stock the top card of your deck, draw, and discard a card.

One thing for that’s in common between both disciple and master is their shared love for magics. As such, Frieren with her potion is a climax and event filter for characters in your waiting room. Fern sneaking glances at her master is an on-play filter with the top card of your deck for a character or event. Additionally, you must force mill the top two cards of your deck when she’s played, and if you mill an event, you may discard a card to salvage a character. Lastly, shocked Frieren allows you to forcibly mill your deck while also letting you discard an event to salvage a character on play. Through these cards, you’ll be able to transform Fern’s salvage targets and other event draws into other resources for your current or later turns.

Some later game support shows Fern realized in her full power and Frieren collecting all manners of magical artifacts. Fern has a modular ability to either dig through your deck for a card or allow you to discard a card to heal the top card of your clock to stock. Frieren is an early play profile if you have six or more events in your waiting room. She has event or climax encore and heals to stock on play if you discard a card.

Another card to mention is that of Fern above. Fern is the suggested brainstorm of the deck as a salvage brainstorm that also lets you rearrange the top two cards of your deck up to three times a turn whenever you play an event. That means that you can potentially set up your deck in ways to cancel small chunks of damage or rearrange your triggers during your turn.

SFN/S108-035S-SR ミミック

All hail and praise the mighty god, Mimic! Mimic turns even the strongest mage into a trivial meal. This is the ACE or MVP of the deck. When it’s reversed, Mimic reveals up to the top four cards of your deck, letting you add an event to hand and discard a card. In the early game and even the late game, Mimic is a godsend for helping you mill out your deck and get your events ready for both Fern and Frieren.

As for backups, Frieren with her disappointed look is a costless 2500 powered counter that bottom decks itself as part of its cost. Frieren’s happy smile is a memory kick counter, perfect for ridding annoying threats permanently.

Frieren and Fern have all kinds of magical tricks up their sleeve. Frieren searching through her briefcase for treasures is a cheap Kazuma profile to dig through your deck for the cards you need. Fern congratulating Frieren for waking up is a a large beatstick during your turn with a special ability to handfix with the top two cards of your deck upon reversing her opponent. Frieren looking smug is a bottom deck reverser that’s also a climax swap profile. Fern staring into the sunset is a healer that also acts as your secondary finisher. Frieren sitting on the grass is a trait remover that also lets you swap events for a cost. Younger Frieren lets you stock a card from hand when she’s played and is an event swapper. Frieren’s flower field is a stock flush that shuffles your opponent’s stock with their deck and also carries Magic in its name for the finisher’s requirements.

Young Fern has yet to experience all the world has to offer her. Compared to her master who has been her for eons, she has much to learn. At the same time, Fern’s youthfulness reminds Frieren of her own past, inciting memories of both joy and sadness. Together, they are a perfect pair in the making; although, Fern does wish that her master would grow up just a little.
