Dragon Maid – Booze and Dragon Maid (Y) [10/29/2022]

During a drunken stupor, Kobayashi had a chance encounter where she casually happened upon a dying dragon. From that night onward, Kobayashi and the dragon, Tohru, signed a contract as master and dragon maid. Although Kobayashi imagined a return to normalcy, she would soon find that life with a dragon isn’t something so ordinary.

As a dragon of the chaos faction, Tohru’s fiery breath offers a modal choice of destruction with the first being a costless gentle blow dealing a single point of damage. Although, if players are willing to pay the cost, Tohru’s second option deals damage equal to a number they declare, ranging from a nice humble single point or their entire deck and more (the number declared ranges from zero to infinity). If you know your opponent’s deck condition, this ability has the potential to land a devastating blow to close out the game.

Tohru takes the stage as our early advantage combo. Behind Tohru’s seemingly innocent face lies her devilish smile. Upon reversing her opponent with her climax in play, Tohru allows players to reveal the top four cards of the deck and add a character to hand, sending the remainder to the waiting room. She further extends her chaos as she provides another 2000 power pump to another character on your field for more consequential reverses.

In order to ensure Tohru gets her reverses, the two cards above are great additions to the deck. The Kobayashi on the left acts as a large power pump to help ensure you get your needed reverses, such as those for your level 1 combo. In addition, Kobayashi acts as a Pina, letting you reviving your characters as necessary. Tohru and friends to the right provides a global 1000 power boost during your turn while acting as a ditch sac outlet if needed to salvage a character.

Both options are great with their own unique utility and support abilities. Regardless of which you’ll pick, both will be beneficial to helping ensure your level 1 combo goes through.

The above brainstorm is essential for the functions of this deck which will be explained later in the post. Outside of being a salvage brainstorm, Kobayashi above has a secondary function to tap itself to let you draw and discard a card if you have a full field.

Before we delve into the functions of our Kobayashi brainstormer, since the card is so important to the deck’s performance, we must discuss ways to get this card to hand or field.

Kobayashi on the left allows you to discard a character to search your deck for the brainstormer or a card with resonance in its card text. Additionally, she allows you to discard a card and send herself to the waiting room to salvage a character. The Tohru card on the right is a direct bond to the Kobayashi brainstorm while being a large beater on the turn she’s played from hand.

Nothing brings a greater smile to Tohru’s face than being in the presence of her master, Kobayashi. As a faithful maid, the Tohru on the left is indebted to her master, requiring the brainstorm to be on the field to gain an additional 2000 power. When she resonates with the Kobayashi brainstorm, she allows you to draw and discard a card at the start of your climax phase, acting as an additional filter.

The Tohru on the right is an early play. You may resonate with the brainstorm to activate one of her modal effects when she’s played from hand to either heal or deal a single point of damage to your opponent.

To defend our field, Tohru is a memory kick counter, cooking up a concoction to permanently remove an opposing card from the game. The Kobayashi on the right is a freefresh counter to bypass the refresh penalty and ensure your deck has a fresh amount of climaxes to hopefully cancel damage.

Tohru and Kobayashi have some other alternatives to further assist in ensuring victory and one such suggestion is the 3/2 Tohru. Upon defeating her opponent, Tohru has the ability to burn your opponent for one extra damage, which can be useful as a secondary finisher. Tohru has a nice variety of early game choices for you to choose from with two different bounce to hand effects to maintain advantage. Make sure you make good use of Kobayashi’s brainstorm bonders to ensure you have her on field and hand for the various resonance shenanigans and more.

Since coming to Earth, Tohru has been guided by Kobayashi as she comes to understand the feeble creatures known as humans. While in her human form, she may appear as a cheerful maid, but in actuality, she’s secretly one of the most powerful dragons to have ever existed. Tohru is the daughter of the king of the chaos faction with firepower capable of causing a world-engulfing inferno; therefore, it is up to you to temper her flame to ensure she cooks her opponent medium-rare.
