Vancouver Battle Royale – 1st Place, EC, Mushoku Tensei (R/B/Y)

For those who are unfamiliar, the Vancouver Battle Royale is a large tournament that features a variety of fighting games, TCGs, and other games. They host prized tourneys taking place in a physical venue for competitors to battle for the coveted grand prize.

EC’s Deck: Mushoku Tensei (R/B/Y)

So what did you feel about the tourney overall?

“It was a fun tournament. It’s the first Weiss tournament I entered with cash prizing, so that was pretty cool. It was also nice seeing some new faces.”

What do you think the greatest strengths in your deck were?

“MTI has a very strong board presence from level 1. The main level 2 standby target, 2/2 Ghislaine global 1k support, allows your level 1 Eris to reach 8.5k, and combined with 2k counter it’s pretty difficult to kill all 3 lanes vs MTI at level 1 unless you are playing a deck with level 1 bombs.”

“From level 2, standbys are now more impactful thanks to 3/2 Paul and 3/2 Roxy. Built-in twindrives also boost your overall consistency by allowing you to pay out climaxes during combat and trigger more standbys to continuously upgrade your board.”

What do you think are weaknesses that the deck does not cover very well?

“It’s rough vs 1k1 decks that can be aggressive in the early game.”

“The deck ideally wants to stay at 0 for a long time so it can generate stock and sculpt the hand to tri-lane 1/1 Eris with the climax combo while loading up the graveyard for 2/2 Ghislaines. If your opponent tri-lanes you and pushes you to 1 early while you’re not set up, you are now behind in damage and you also cannot present a strong board, meaning your opponent will win their lanes again in the following turn. It’s especially tough when they go aggressive turn 1 and follow it up with their level 1 1k1 combo. I’ll likely be hitting level 2 on my third turn, since compression during the first deck is terrible and I don’t have too many ways to mill for free.”

“In addition, in JP meta standby decks with strong offensive power that rely on encores can give the deck a lot of trouble, such as Quints and Nijigasaki. Those decks can get over MTIs board pretty easily, and since MTI lacks good encore threats its not easy for MTI to trade back. Few people in Japan seem to include a copy or two of 2/2 Eris with encore for this reason.”

What did you think about your deck’s performance overall?

“I think it did well. I think most people are scared to go aggressive during the early game (rightfully so, since it can backfire pretty badly), so in most of my games I was able to build a strong level 1 board and snowball the game from there.”

What was your favourite card in your deck?

MTI/S83-E056R “Sword God Style” Ghislaine

“Probably the 2/1 Ghislaine anti-change counter. I’ve seen many people drop the card from their lists, but it has won me a lot of games.”

What are some potential changes you would consider making to the deck?

“Nothing much. I think MTI is a relatively “solved” deck. In all 8standby MTI lists, ~48 cards remain constant, and people play a tech card or two that fits their local meta. I am pretty happy with how the deck is right now.”

What was your hardest match-up?

“Love Live Nijigasaki was my hardest matchup during the tournament. Nijigasaki can hit insane numbers with all their cards having twindrives combined with their 1/0 support (which I really think should’ve been 1/1). MTI can build a strong board but Nijigasaki can get over it relatively easily. Luckily my opponent did not hit too many standbys so I was able to clutch out a win.”

What was your favourite moment(s) in the tournament?

“Yoomin going 0-2 drop”

What is your favourite part of this series?

“If cat mommy has millions of fans I am one of them. If cat mommy has ten fans I am one of them. If cat mommy has only one fan, that one is me. If cat mommy has no fans, that means I am no more on the earth. If the world is against cat mommy, I am against the world. I love #catmommy till my last breath.”

Any shout-outs?

“The usual suspects, you know who you are. YP/YMK/JC/JB/DS (and probably a few more that I’m forgetting)”

Final words?

“Cat mommy > Roxy”
