Crabs, Glasses, and a Certain Snail

In early 2016, after several years without any support, Monogatari Second Season Booster was released. Within this set, the Monogatari series had been fully updated to modern standards at that time. One could even call Monogatari reborn essentially. Monogatari Second Season was a set that was completely modernized that could be played completely stand-alone or with some support from previous sets.

With this newest set, Monogatari became a powerhouse. Staples and effects like those above gave the set a new breath of life, making the set on par with other sets out at the time.

Another great powerful profile was introduced in the set as shown above. The power of this type of effect granted protection from the ever-dominant level one Shimakaze profile. Furthermore, she allowed you recycle your other resources, allowing the player to replay potential value cards once more the following turn. Being at level zero allowed its effects to be out as early as turn one, letting the player recycle tech cards or other more beneficial cards immediately if the opponent could not get rid of Shinobu.

Following the updated profiles for the set, the set also had access to some powerful free finishers. Hachikuji, in particular, allowed one to stack cancel burn on a single character. Hanekawa, at the time, was also a nice engine piece that could be used to charge quite a large amount of stock, especially if she persisted for several turns, allowing for late game payouts or other powerful effects.

Furthermore, the set had availability to several ways to try to mitigate damage and push damage. In certain situations, the cards above were options that could increase the chances of cancelling in the player’s favour or force their opponent into a less than optimal position.

Furthermore, the set also had access to some filtering cards that could be potentially costless through the use of a free mechanic, experience. Overall, Monogatari Second Season was quite an impressive set. The set had access to a plethora of powerful tools and filter effects to manipulate hand, field, and deck where it needed to be. This, on top of having access to other cards from older sets if need be, gave the set a cutting edge over those around it at its prime.
